World Record Blog: Helen Marshall, Lead Artist
Helen Marshall tells us how the construction of the mosaic is going:
The photos are being assembled one by one onto the two hundred and eighty eight plywood boards by the volunteers and the tension in the hall at Thinktank is heating up.
It was great to meet some of the people who are giving their time to the project and helping with the mass assembly, many of whom have submitted a lot of photos and who keep coming across them in the montage.
One lady who only submitted just a handful found several of hers in just one day. Our target is to build at least 15 panels a day in order to get everything finished in time for the construction company to take over and build the base for The Big Picture. As each panel takes quite a bit of time and attention to detail, that is a very close schedule with a lot of work needed.
It’s an ongoing challenge, and I’m just holding out for dry weather on Saturday! I’m excited about this piece and cannot imagine, even now, the real scale of it and the fact every photo has been used to make something photorealistic, precise and outrageously huge…

I am one of the 8 finalists and my partner and I went along on Saturday to the Thinktank to give them a helping hand. We managed 2 boards in 3 hours and crikey - it was tiresome! I spent some time searching for my other photos but wasn’t lucky enough to see them, but the final picture is going to be awesome, and there are some amzing photos on there too. Can’t wait to see it, was so desperate to try and figure something out, but absolutely nothing came through, I really have no idea! Good luck everyone, whoever makes it, it will be fab and each and every one deserves their place in the final, see you all on Saturday!

Can people like me find out exactly where the photos we submitted are on the mosiac?

Sorry Len, that’s not so easy. Best way is to think about what colour your photos were and to zoom in to the areas of the artwork that are similar to that.
People have found that your own pictures leap out at them, so hopefully you’ll be able to find yours.
